A Report from NESBA's First Weekend Retreat

By Lynn Shepherd

It was a chilly March weekend on Cape Cod when a group of talented artists gathered to enjoy a weekend of creativity, workshops, camaraderie and food.  NESBA had its first weekend retreat in Harwich in a light filled space at 204 Sisson.

Participants enjoyed a workshop with Stephanie King creating seaweed collages.  Stephanie gave a demo how to create the collages and showed her work.  She provided seaweeds, and plant materials along with a press for each of us and then the creating began.  It was a new path for our art journeys.

Bobbi Angell talked about her experience illustrating and copper etching.  Then the she discussed her books including the latest release about Darwin and vines plus seed packets and garden catalogues.  We had a shopping opportunity for her lovely etchings.

Sunday morning Jan Boyd taught us about illuminated letters, various types of gold, backgrounds of gouache and casein.  It was interesting to learn about the process, some history and Jan’s experience.  We had fun experimenting with the different types of golds  and a variety of alphabets to create beautiful illuminated letters.

There was plenty of food  and of course chocolate.  Evenings were gatherings to enjoy wine and dinner.  The retreat will be back again next year due to popular demand.
